About this role

The Department of Design & Construction, Division of Infrastructure, is seeking a Design Engineer to join various teams within the unit. The successful candidate will report to an Engineer-In-Charge and will be responsible for preparing contract documents, specifications, and final estimates; conducting engineering investigations; and developing contract plans and working drawings.

Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting field surveys to assess current conditions and compiling reports on findings. The engineer will participate in engineering reviews and studies, and design projects with minimal oversight, developing contract plans and working drawings from field data. This hands-on work ensures that infrastructure projects meet design standards and community needs.

The position is part of a collaborative team within the Division of Infrastructure, working alongside other design professionals to deliver public works projects for the City of New York. All candidates must be authorized to work full-time in the United States; DDC does not sponsor visas.

This role provides an opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure in New York City, with exposure to all phases of design and construction within a large public agency. Successful candidates may advance within the civil service system to higher engineering positions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college
  • One year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work (or a Master's degree in civil engineering in lieu of experience)
  • Must be authorized to work full-time in the United States; no visa sponsorship available
  • Educational credentials must be from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized institution or equivalency verified
  • Experience in conducting field surveys and assessing current conditions
  • Ability to prepare contract documents, specifications, and working drawings
  • Knowledge of civil engineering design principles and practices
