About this role

This role assists the engineering department at New Millennium in ensuring sound engineering design of steel joist and deck products through all stages of development. The position involves designing steel joists, joist girders, and steel decking per SJI and SDI standards.

Daily responsibilities include roof and floor designs for projects ranging from retail buildings to schools and warehouses. The engineer also designs structural steel and connections to applicable codes and standards, and provides engineering direction to detailing, design, sales, and production departments.

This role involves interpreting contract documents and communicating with architects, engineers of record, fabricators, and others on product design requirements. The engineer works within a collaborative engineering department at a subsidiary of Steel Dynamics, Inc.

The position offers the opportunity to pursue PE licensure and become conversant in AISC, AISI, SJI, and SDI codes and specifications. Engineers gain exposure to a variety of project types and deepen their expertise in structural steel design.

Requirements

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, ideally with emphasis in structures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be an EIT and capable of pursuing PE licensure in the future.
  • Prior structural and/or joist experience preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in interpreting structural drawings and contract documents preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design steel joists, joist girders, and steel decking according to Steel Joist Institute and Steel Deck Institute standards.
  • Perform roof and floor designs for projects ranging from retail buildings, schools, warehouses, and more.
  • Design structural steel and connections to applicable codes and standards.
  • Provide engineering direction to detailing, design, sales, and production departments.
  • Interpret contract documents and communicate with architects, engineers of record, fabricators, and others on product design requirements.
  • Become conversant in AISC, AISI, SJI, and SDI codes and specifications.
