Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is a national engineering firm delivering holistic advice for complex challenges. We seek current students for a Fall 2026 Geotechnical Engineering Internship in Waltham. Interns work side-by-side with experts in office and field to apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects.

As a Geotechnical Engineering Intern, assist with investigations, analyses, and design of deep and shallow foundations, ground improvement, earth retaining structures, and excavation support. Perform analyses related to soil settlement, slope stability, soil dynamics, groundwater flow, and seepage. Evaluate earthen embankments, dams, tunnels, pavements, and forensic evaluations of failed structures.

Collaborate with SGH’s Marine, Flood, Engineering Mechanics, Structural, and Building Technology groups on slope stabilization, retaining walls, footing drainage, floodproofing, and plaza drainage systems. Organize field data and assist with research to facilitate analysis, problem-solving, and repair design. Support construction operations including new construction, rehabilitation, and litigation claims.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled and plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
  • Interest in geotechnical engineering
  • Maintain high grades in studies
  • Interest in learning through hands-on work experience in a consulting engineering environment

Responsibilities

  • Assist with engineering investigations, analyses, and design of deep and shallow foundations, ground improvement systems, earth retaining structures, and excavation support systems
  • Perform analyses related to soil settlement, slope stability, soil dynamics, groundwater flow, and seepage
  • Evaluate earthen embankments, dams, reservoirs, tunnels, asphalt, and concrete pavements
  • Conduct analyses and forensic evaluations of failed or deteriorated structures
  • Support construction operations for new construction, rehabilitation, strengthening, and repair
  • Evaluate litigation claims projects
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary groups on slope stabilization, retaining walls, floodproofing, and drainage systems
  • Organize field data, perform research, analysis with hand calculations and software, and prepare client deliverables
