About this role

Join Alcoa’s Vacation Student program as a Geotechnical Engineer, based at our Pinjarra Refinery and Perth Corporate office in WA. This 12-week paid summer placement offers the chance to put your university knowledge into practice and propel your career forward.

You will support the Global Impoundments team and local civil engineers in handling dam safety, preparing facility plans, and applying standard methodology engineering technology. Your work will include providing engineering input into the design and maintenance of residue storage facilities and contributing to refinery and residue EH&S problem resolution.

You will be matched with a senior specialist who will offer hands-on training, mentoring, and coaching. The program is designed to help you become a creative problem solver while completing meaningful projects in a supportive, open-minded workplace where your ideas are highly valued.

This role provides exposure to industry and a future career at Alcoa, with increased opportunity to gain a place in the Alcoa Graduate Program after completing your degree. You will work locally in an onsite environment, enabling you to return home to friends and family every night.

Requirements

  • Currently studying tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline
  • Ideally in penultimate year of study, but applications across all year groups accepted
  • Self-motivated and passionate for chosen discipline, eager to learn and expand knowledge
  • Capable of working independently with ability to communicate and engage with multiple stakeholders to obtain a project outcome
  • Strong team player with effective time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Available to commence end of November for a full-time 12-week period ending February
  • Able to travel to and from work location each day

Responsibilities

  • Support the Global Impoundments team and local civil engineers in handling dam safety
  • Prepare facility plans and apply standard methodology engineering technology
  • Provide engineering input into the design and maintenance of residue storage facilities
  • Contribute towards the refinery and residue EH&S and provide insight into problem resolution for bauxite residue assets
  • Share learnings and provide input towards the WA residue capital planning, approval, and review process
  • Handle assigned project(s) with appropriate responsibility, utilizing innovative thinking and passion for growth
