About this role
Barr is seeking a geotechnical engineer to join an innovative team of 90+ geotechnical engineers and geologists. In this hybrid role, you will work on projects involving traditional geotechnical and civil analysis and design related to foundations, slope stability, seepage, bearing capacity, settlement, and earth retention.
The ideal candidate is intrinsically motivated and emphasizes client service. They enjoy working independently and as part of a team, using technical ability and project management expertise across a variety of projects while remaining flexible to meet deadlines and client needs.
This position involves performing geotechnical field investigations, assigning laboratory tests, analyzing data, and supporting report development. Fieldwork includes construction observation, instrumentation installation and monitoring, and oversight of inspections under varying site conditions.
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered, with time split between a Barr office and home office. The role is based in Salt Lake City with an expectation of at least one office day per week and up to 25 percent domestic travel for fieldwork.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, or civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis; graduate degree preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one preferred.
- 5+ years of relevant experience with strong technical skills in a wide range of geotechnical analysis and design disciplines.
- Some project management experience preferred.
- Willingness and ability to regularly travel.
- Proficiency with geotechnical software programs including GeoStudio, Rocscience, LPile, APile, gINT or BoreDM, or FLAC.
Responsibilities
- Perform geotechnical field investigations, assign laboratory tests, analyze lab and field data, and support development of geotechnical reports.
- Conduct fieldwork including construction observation, instrumentation installation and monitoring, and field oversight and inspections.
- Assist with planning, coordinating, and executing projects while ensuring milestones are met and providing updates to project managers and clients.
- Prepare proposals and cost estimates for geotechnical investigations and design work.
- Complete engineering investigation and design support tasks from conceptual phase through design under senior professionals.
- Perform geotechnical and civil analysis and design related to foundations, slope stability and stabilization, seepage, settlement, earth retention, and dams.
- Provide training and mentorship support for other geotechnical engineer team members.
