About this role

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection seeks an Associate Project Manager I to oversee service contracts and provide technical support to the Drinking Water Operations South Engineering Group in Valhalla, New York. The role focuses on maintenance, repair, testing, and inspection of equipment and structures at drinking water treatment facilities to ensure regulatory compliance and reliable delivery of safe water.

Daily work includes preparing and reviewing plans, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for in-house projects. The position develops technical sketches, performs calculations, supports minor design work, and prepares contract bid packages while coordinating construction and repair activities across capital projects and Job Order Contracts.

The Associate Project Manager I works under the Engineering Manager within a directorate responsible for critical public water supply infrastructure. Collaboration occurs with City agencies, contractors, and stakeholders to align project execution with operational requirements, safety standards, and federal and state drinking water regulations.

Success depends on strong organizational skills, clear communication, and commitment to the bureau’s public service mission. The role offers opportunities to assume supervisory duties during the temporary absence of the immediate supervisor and to influence project outcomes that protect public health for all New Yorkers.

Requirements

  • Knowledge in trades (mechanical, plumbing, electric) and construction means and methods.
  • Versed in NYC and NYS building code.
  • Mechanically inclined with understanding of financial planning and forecasting.
  • Good recordkeeping and detailed attention to scheduling.
  • Conscientious with strong information sharing and critical and analytical thinking skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support by preparing and reviewing plans, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for in-house service and construction projects.
  • Assist with coordination during construction and repair activities for in-house projects, capital projects, and Job Order Contracts of moderate difficulty.
  • Support technical documentation including minor design work, preparing technical specifications, engineering plans, and contract bid packages.
  • Develop cost estimates or obtain vendor quotes for supplies, equipment, tools, and services and assist with research related to equipment or facility deficiencies.
  • Establish project time and cost schedules and determine and coordinate activities among individuals, agencies, and departments responsible for project completion.
  • Review schedules, reports, and orders prepared by consultants, contractors, and agencies to ensure conformance with project timelines and requirements.
  • Monitor work performance, resolve issues during meetings or project coordination, and meet with City agencies, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Participate in the bid process and contractor selection and assume the duties of the immediate supervisor in their temporary absence.
