About this role

The Principal Design Engineer manages and leads projects with a thorough understanding of delivery to quality, cost, and programme deliverables. They manage single- and multi-disciplinary projects to cost, schedule, and quality criteria. As a key member of the Design Management team, they ensure technical compliance and successful delivery of design projects.

Lead aspects of infrastructure design and act as lead designer on a range of project sizes appropriate to experience. Generate civil and structural designs and collaborate with Omexom Engineers to convert them into working drawings. Apply significant knowledge of industry legislation to implement requirements effectively.

Work on own initiative while supervising design, graduate engineers, and trainees. Provide civil and structural design to various elements as required by BUGM and reports. Possess advanced skills to perform tasks, make judgements, and check work at the highest level.

Contribute to ICE/IET training schemes and support graduates through development and mentoring. Promote safe by design principles, sustainability, and low carbon options. Report on design performance to the Head of Design or associates.

Requirements

  • Advanced level of skill and understanding in civil and structural design
  • Thorough understanding of managing project delivery to quality, cost, and programme
  • Significant knowledge and experience of industry legislation
  • Ability to supervise design, graduate engineers, and trainees
  • Competence to check work at the highest level
  • Experience leading infrastructure design on various project sizes
  • Familiarity with discharging Designer responsibilities under CDM 2015
  • Knowledge to act as Principal Designer coordinating pre-construction phase

Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead projects to quality, cost, and programme deliverables
  • Day to day management of a design team
  • Undertake checking of design deliverables
  • Review and cascade current industry standards
  • Ensure safety, health, and environmental awareness of all design staff
  • Discharge responsibilities of the Designer under CDM 2015 regulations
  • Act as Principal Designer under CDM 2015 where required
  • Lead detailed civil and structural design and calculations
